Assemblyman Reed Gusciora got his start in New Jersey state politics working on the 1989 gubernatorial campaign of the late Barbara Boggs Sigmund. Prior to that, he attended Seton Hall Law School earning his J.D. in 1988. He studied international relations at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he worked his way through college at the Library of Congress. After graduation, he worked on Capitol Hill in the congressional offices of U.S. Representatives Andy Ireland (D-FL) and the late Mike Synar (D-OK).

Assemblyman Gusciora sponsored the law requiring the State to adopt California "Clean Car" standards for the sale of low emission vehicles; the law mandating that electronic voting machines produce voter-verified paper records; the law eliminating the 100 year old law placing liens on psychiatric patients at state institutions; the law that changed the legal standard in child custody cases to protect the health and well being of a child when abuse has occurred; and the law that streamlines developmentally disabled services through the Departments of Health, Human Services and Education.
Not one to shy away from controversy, Assemblyman Gusciora was the prime sponsor of the New Jersey Medical Marijuana Compassionate Use Act, allowing for the medicinal use of marijuana. He was also the prime sponsor of the recently enacted bill to mandate the recycling of computers and televisions.
