GUSCIORA WELCOMES SDA FUNDING FOR TRENTON

Urges quick action on proposed projects

Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Princeton) commended the School Development Authority (SDA) for providing $247 million to the City of Trenton for school construction, under the latest funding allocation plan.

“I commend the SDA for recognizing the pressing need in the state’s capital city for more up-to-date and safer schools to ensure that our students receive a quality education,” stated Gusciora.  “This money is a step in the right direction although we still have a long way to go to ensure that every Trenton school meets modern education standards.”

Under the SDA proposal, $15 million is available for new construction of the Early Childhood Center, $82 million for new construction of the Roebling School, and $150 million for either the renovation or reconstruction of Trenton Central High School.  The SDA has also given Trenton the ability to suggest how this money could be reallocated.

“It would be in our student’s best interest to see all three projects move forward in a timely manner,” continued Gusciora.  “It is also imperative to maintain proper oversight of these funds to ensure each dollar is being spent appropriately and efficiently.”

There is still lingering debate over the future of Trenton Central High School.  Some community leaders have proposed a renovation to protect the historical integrity of the building while others are encouraging a brand new construction.  A third proposal consists of breaking Trenton Central into smaller high schools.

“The fact remains students have greater achievements in smaller settings.  While historical elements of Trenton Central could be incorporated into any proposal, the main focus should be on reducing class size,” concluded Gusciora.  “Students may be better served by having smaller and modern high schools, which complement the newly opened alternative high school.”
