GUSCIORA APPLAUDS PRINCETON BOROUGH AND TOWNSHIP FOR CONSOLIDATION STUDY

First step in process towards sharing services

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Princeton) praised the vote by the Princeton Township and Princeton Borough governing bodies which will study the possibility of sharing or consolidating government services.

“The action taken by the Township and Borough is a necessary step towards bringing these towns together,” said Gusciora.  “I commend the members of the Princeton Borough Council and the Princeton Township Committee for launching this study.”

The towns will now apply to the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) who will conduct the study through an independent consultant and a commission made up of local officials and residents from the two towns.  If approved, the cost of the study will be funded through a state grant.

“The State is always willing to partner with towns in order to explore better and more efficient ways to use taxpayer dollars and deliver government services more efficiently,” continued Gusciora.  “I fully support the Borough and Township’s application and believe more towns should be looking towards shared services.”

Gusciora has introduced several measures to promote shared services as a way to reduce New Jersey’s property tax burden.  One such proposal, Assembly Bill 4077, requires New Jersey’s thirty “doughnut” and “doughnut hole” municipalities to either merge or share major municipal services within 10 years.

“Sharing services and reducing government redundancy needs to be a major part of any property tax reduction plan,” concluded Gusciora.  “I firmly believe that Princeton Township and Princeton Borough can be model for the rest of the State.”
