N.J.'s 2 openly gay lawmakers plan fundraiser at Washington gay bar

TRENTON — The only two openly gay lawmakers in New Jersey are having a campaign fundraiser at a gay bar during the Chamber of Commerce's annual "Walk to Washington" next week.

Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, who when he came out in 2006 became the first openly gay lawmaker in state history, said that he's hosting the "fun-raiser" with Assemblyman Tim Eustace, who upon his 2012 swearing in became the second openly gay legislator.

"We're having it at a gay bar because everybody wants to go to a gay bar, but are afraid to admit it. So it gives them an excuse," Gusciora (D-Mercer) told The Auditor.

The event will take place Thursday at Number Nine, about two miles southeast of the hotel attendees stay in. This is the third time the fundraiser has been held, though Gusciora had to skip it last year.

Asked if the two assemblymen were capitalizing on their unique status, Eustace said not really.

"We really don't capitalize," he said. "I think it's $20."
